Monday Funday: January in Review

The first Friday of each month, I do a quick article reviewing topics from the previous month, including links to the articles, breaking it down by platform and theme as well as providing a link to read the full article.  Unfortunately, while I started the article on Friday, I didn't get to finish it till Sunday night, so it's not going up till Monday. A wee bit late.

  • Jan. 27: Tuesday Tips: Watch and learn - Another quick tip, which relates to all social media platforms, is sometimes to sit back, watch and learn how the platforms work and what engages people the most. Sometimes watching and learning is your best bet to learn as you go.

Flex-Pharma is hiring a Social Media Manager in New York, NY

This is a freelance opportunity (approx 20 hours a week) in the short term, with the potential of quickly ramping up to full time. Reporting to Head of Marketing, the Social Media Manager will work closely with the Marketing and Communications team to establish a social media presence across a range of platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Vine, SnapChat and more. The Social Media manager will use a passion for and experience in working with a range of sports-related subjects to identify and cultivate different digital audiences from big league pro sports to more niche or extreme sports verticals. He or she will also be responsible for ongoing research and monitoring, as well as consumer engagement of related online communities related to various sports audience verticals.

Manager will be primarily responsible for the execution of an editorial calendar and a social media content stream. This role will work in lock step with PR/communications to coordinate delivering key messaging and announcements across social in a strategic, precisely timed manner. In addition, he or she will help develop the social media ‘voice’ for the brand and look for opportunities to create or engage in conversations related to breaking news or relevant trends in that voice. This role will also be primarily responsible for managing of reporting and measurement of social media performance on an ongoing basis. The Manager will contribute to overall marketing strategy development.

Ideal candidate has at least 3-4 years experience in similar role with lifestyle or sports brand, either in-house or inside an agency environment, and thrives in a fast paced, dynamic, start-up environment. MTV World is hiring a Social Media Marketing Manager in New York, NY

The Social Media Marketing Manager will be responsible for social media efforts designed to increase brand awareness and engagement in promoting tune-in/streams/views for MTV World's long form series on various platforms. This includes social efforts that are part of marketing plans across various online communities and social platforms. You will be expected to strategize, produce/create innovative content, schedule, publish and occasionally live tweet. Provocative and compelling creativity in producing social media content across multiple social platforms – community development of Facebook pages and Twitter profiles, image and video sharing platforms (Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, etc.) and social blogging (Tumblr). This person will also be responsible for managing content on the YouTube platform.

Creativity in content creation is an extremely important part of this role. The ideal candidate must have a complete and instinctive understanding of social networks, new trends and how they can be leveraged collectively to drive impact, loyalty and engagement.

Daily responsibilities include:

  • Managing official communities across social media including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr as well as
  • Social media asset creation and management
  • Tracking of social content
  • Reporting online buzz regarding programming
  • Identifying new opportunities for marketing based on social media insights, existing data and content – and executing on these ideas to build an online engaged community 
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends and the competitive landscape, including social media best practices, emerging social tools, etc. and ongoing monitoring of peer accounts/efforts
  • Exploring new social media marketing opportunities for MTV World


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Proven experience and success in social media marketing 
  • At least 3 -5 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of Fashion, Film, Music, and Activism content and relevant players in these categories
  • Ability to act as a social content curator activating fan communities
  • Experience/proven success with social media publishing and community development, monitoring and measurement platforms
