Thursday Tutorials: Changing Order of Tabs on Your Facebook Page

One of the most common questions I get for clients is "Can we change the order of tabs/apps on my Facebook page?"  The answer is "Yes.  Absolutely."

Much like last week's tutorial, Changing the Order of Sections on Your Page's Timeline, this week's tutorial shows it is pretty easy to make changes to your page yourself.

Click on the "More" Button in your Tabs area.  This should open up a drop down menu that looks similar to this:

Click on Manage Tabs.

This will open up a pop-up menu similar to last week's window, but with your tabs instead of your sidebar.

Drag and drop them into whatever order you want them to appear in, as seen below:

Click Save.  Just like last week, it will force the page to reload and you'll see the tabs reordered, just like below:

It's that easy.

Wednesday Words: Extended circles

Early last year one of the words we defined as part of the Social Media Marketing Wednesday Words was Circles.  Circles is how you arrange your connections within Google +.  You can group your connections into circles with which you then select the names of the circles you want to share your posts with.

But there's also extended circles on Google+.  Extended circles includes not only the people in your circles but the people who are in your circles' circle (aka a friend of a friend can see your post).

With Google+ you can chose for your post to only be shared with your circle or if you want people in the extended circles to be able to see your post.  When you chose to let extended circles see your post, your post could appear on their news feed instead of in just your friend's news feed.

Something to keep in mind when sharing with circles and extended circles on Google+.

Thursday Tutorial: Changing the Order of Sections on Your Page's Timeline

Have you ever wanted to change the layout of your page, but wasn't sure how to? Perhaps you weren't sure what you could change about your page. Today we'll talk about changing the order of the sections on the left column of your page - which is extremely simple to do.

To start, load the page you want to re-arrange the sections on. Mouse over the title of any of the sections. On the right hand side a pencil (editing) icon should appear. If you mouse over that it will say "Manage" as seen in the image below.

When you click on "Manage" the pop-up window will appear, as seen below. If you have Javascript or pop-ups turned off, you may wish to temporarily turn these on while editing the page.

From here, it is as simple as dragging the bars into whatever order you want to drag them. Note: You cannot move People or About. Those are locked in place by Facebook. but the other ones are moveable by you. Once you have them moved to where you want them, click save.

Once moved and saved, the popup will disappear and the page will automatically refresh. your changes should be visible in the refreshed window, like mine is below.

It's that easy. Check it out on your page and figure out where you want things to appear when your viewers use your page.

Enjoy!

New Facebook Page Layout Coming Soon

If you're one of the lucky pages, you've already been converted over to the new Facebook page layout, if not, you may still have to wait a few weeks.

Personally, I like the new way pages look and you have a bit more control over things as well.

Facebook actually has a post that talks about all of this and how it is streamlined to help admins as well.

Check it out here:  https://www.facebook.com/business/news/A-Streamlined-Look-for-Pages

Wednesday Words: Circles

Todays's Wednesday Word is a word that, thus far, is only associated with Google+ (G+): Circles.

Circles is how you arrange your connections within Google +.  You can group your connections into circles with which you then select the names of the circles you want to share your posts with.

You can also put people into multiple circles.  I have circles for VIPs, close friends, family, acquaintance and industry contacts.
The interesting thing to note though is while Circles can affect your personal profile on Google +, it can also affect your business page there as well.  People can add your page to circles (which allows them to see some of what you publish), but for them to see more, you have to add them to your page's circles.

And, just like Facebook, this isn't an automatic step.  You have to do this yourself.

Keep in mind, if you want certain articles you post to your page to target certain members of your audience and not others, be sure to put them into specific circles, then select that circle for the item to be posted to.

In the coming weeks, we'll be touching on Google + and how to use it as Social Media along with Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

As always, I welcome questions on any of the social media platforms and look forward to answering questions of my readers.

Wednesday Words: Avatar

Avatar, not to be confused with the movie with blue aliens, is an image used to represent yourself on a forum, Twitter, Facebook, etc.  It can be a picture of yourself, a logo you like or any number of things that represents something about you.

People new to social media are sometimes confused by the term avatar.  For Twitter and Facebook, the avatar should be your company logo - that way the Facebook/Twitter post is easily recognizable while enforcing and enhancing branding of the name and logo.

The Avatar is what people will see and associate with you when scanning through their social media - so you want it to be identifiable and recognizable.

If you are unsure what you should do for your page's Avatar or your Twitter Feed Avatar, I highly suggest looking at other, similar Twitter Feed and Facebook pages, then go from there.  If you still aren't sure, consult with others.  You'd be surprised what people will suggest that just might work.

Wednesday Words: People Talking About This (PTAT)

Once your Facebook page exceeds a certain number of users - I believe it's 25 or 30 - and you aren't listed as a Community Page, you get to see and make use of Page Insights.  One of the statistics you will see most often is "People Talking About This" which is today's word.

You can find the "Talking About This" statistic under the name of your page - once you are past the admin area - to the right of your page avatar.  See screenshot below with the # Talking About This circled in red.

So, for this page I maintain and am sole poster of content to, I have 137 likes and 4 people talking about my page.

But what does that mean exactly?

This statistic shows the number of people actively engaging on your page by commenting, sharing, liking, etc.  It also includes people who comment on things shared from your page's wall to other walls (because they are talking about it).  It also includes people who share your page in general and encourage people to like it.

It's a good number to pay attention to if looking at the insights page becomes overwhelming.  Knowing that people are talking about your page is always a good thing.

Remember the adage: Any publicity is good publicity.

Are there any words you hear in relation to social media that you want more information about?  Or questions you have about any of the words, tips or tutorials I post?  I want to hear from you.  I'd love to be able to expand on things or answer your questions in upcoming blog posts.

Wednesday Words: Edge Rank

Last week we talked about algorithms used by social media sites to figure out how many of your users see what percentage of your posts and briefly mentioned Edge Rank and how that was Facebook's way of determining not only who sees content from your pages, but how many friends see what you post.

This week, we'll talk a bit more about Edge Rank and how it affects you and your profile and your page(s). Important note: Facebook has discontinued using "Edge Rank" but several of the things involved with pages and profiles still use the terms found within Edge Rank, thus the article on it.

Pages and profiles that have more engagement (likes, comments, shares, etc.) will appear more often and more permanently in feeds that have the page liked than pages and profiles which have less engagement.  Most articles agree that there seem to be three factors that way into the Edge Rank algorithm: Affinity, Weight and Time Decay.

Affinity is based on how friendly you (or your page are).  Or, to better define it, how much your friends/users "like" you.  The more you interact with your friend(s) or page(s), the more often the friend's (or page's) posts will appear in your news feed.  And vice versa.  For pages, interacting with your users and encouraging interaction and engagement is a necessity.  Remember, engagement can be as simple as "liking" something a friend or page posts, or liking comments on your page.

Weight, according to my sources below, is the likelyhood of something being shared.  They mention links, photos and videos being among things that have more weight and are seen more in wall feeds,  but I have noticed lately that links are among the lowest number of things seen by our users.  Posts without links and posts without images that are short and ask a question seem to have more weight than images or links.   So it's very possible that, once again, the algorithms have changed.

Time decay refers to the likelyhood of people seeing older posts when newer posts are available for them to see.  The older a post is, the less likely it is for someone to see it.

Several sites, including my last source linked below, believe that Edge Rank is dead and cite the fact that Facebook hasn't used the term in some time as well as recent interviews with Facebook that discuss how news feed items appear.

Even if it is true, they do acknowledge that the three factors (affinity, weight and time decay) still play factors in whatever ranking system Facebook is using.  Which means knowing and understanding the terms used with Edge Ranks is still valuable to working with your page.

For more information, check out the links below under sources.

Wednesday Words: Sharability

Today's word - sharability - applies to all social media and isn't specific to just one or another.

Almost everyone on the internet recognizes the "Share This" icon that appears on websites and our smart phones, encouraging us to use one of the many ways to share something we like with others.  Sharability is the "measurement" of how engaging a post is which is likely to cause it to be shared.

This means, how likely are your fans/users to retweet/share/comment on your posts, videos and images to their fans/followers/wall?

Having sharable content is important for user engagement and gaining new users.  Keep in mind, it's not an invitation to create things that are likely to cause people to spam it, but sharing things genuinely of interest to others.

Ultimately, when creating posts, see what types of posts your users share more often.  It may take a month or two to figure that out, but once you do, you'll know what combination of posts to make each week to help raise the amount of likes your page has and how to increase the visibility of your page/tweets/content.

Important News: Name Change

Well this was an unexpected and sudden change when I finally got around to writing a tutorial on how to create a webpage fan page for Facebook.  Using this blog as my goal for the page, I started creating the Facebook page with the original name of the blog for the page's name: Facebook Marketing: Hints and Tips.

I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised to see that Facebook wouldn't allow the use of their name to create pages.  Go figure.

Thus we have ended up with a similar name, which means an update of links and an update in name to "Social Media Marketing: Tips and Hints."  That also means I have a broader subject area to write about as well.

Images accompanying the titles of articles will help you determine whether the article is for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ or whatever else is out there.

As always, I welcome questions and hope to hear from you soon!

Wednesday Words: Facebook Place

If you have a physical location - store, restaurant, etc. - there is a good chance that you have a generically created Facebook Place already there and waiting for you to claim it.  You may even have fans already.

Search for yourself on Facebook before you attempt to create a page for your business.  If you find your company as a Facebook Place, follow the steps to go about claiming the page, then take it over and run it as you would a typical Facebook Page.

The nice thing about Facebook Place, customers can check into it from Facebook and leave reviews.

Thursday Tutorials: Picking the Category for Your Facebook Page

The first step in creating page, the step that comes immediately after tapping the "Create a Page" button, is often the most challenging step for people new to Social Media, or if their page could, potentially, fall into several categories.

The good thing?  Facebook has narrowed down the number of options to six, so it's not as hard as it was in the past to decide.

This tutorial will go into a bit more detail than is on the Facebook site and help you decide what option to chose.

First, let's list the six options, then we'll define them:

  1. Local Business or Place
  2. Company, Organization or Institution
  3. Brand or Product
  4. Artist, Band or Public Figure
  5. Entertainment
  6. Cause or Community
1.  Local Business or Place

This is probably the easiest one to figure out.  If the answer to the following question is yes, then select this page:  Do I own a physical location to sell goods and services from?

When you select this option, you have a drop down menu to select the best option for your business or location, whether it be a restaurant, club, bookstore, airport, retail/shop, or something else, it will likely fall into one of the choices they have available for you.  If it doesn't fall into one of those categories, pick the one it's closest to, or perhaps reconsider your choices.

If this is the right choice, fill in the rest of the information - it's important not to leave any of that information blank as it will help customers - and potential customers - to find you.

Agree to Facebook Terms and Services and click on the final button to go into the next stage of page creation.  (Note: we will not go into full page creation here.  I have no business or some of the other categories to create, so it will be difficult to guide for specific ones - if there are differences in the admin area.  There will be a generic page creation guide down the road.)

2.  Company, Organization or Institution

This category can also qualify as a more complicated category because some people may feel their local business may fall into to company, organization or institution category instead of local business category.  Ultimately, it's your decision to pick the best spot for it - and this article will help with that.

This option is a bit of a broader than just local businesses.  For example, McDonalds, Wal-Mart and Wells Fargo, most of which will have local community run establishments, would have a larger company driven Facebook page.  Some restaurants and local franchises of larger companies will have their independent Facebook pages under local businesses as well, which is part of their local marketing initiative.

So if you are an international or even global company or a parent company with multiple branches - you would select this category.

If you are a church, a 501c3, a cause, an institution like a University, a political part, a community organization or any of the other choices in the drop down menu to chose from, this one is likely for you.

If this is the right choice, select the category that fits closest to what your page is for, fill in the name of the company you are creating the page for, then agree to Facebook Terms and Services and click on the final button to go into the next stage of page creation.

3.  Brand or Product

This one is probably the more complicated of the choices as a lot of things people don't think would fall into this category, do.  It is also the most broad of the categories available.

This category can cover something as easy as a product produced by a larger corporation (say Heinz Ketchup as a fanpage or WiiU's Fanpage).  Keep in mind, there are "official" fanpages and "unofficial fan-based fanpages."  But it can also be for Apps (like iPhone/Android games etc.), software, websites and someone who is just launching their own brand or products.

So, for example, this blog will fall under this category and then the website category.  My jewelry making Facebook page should fall under this one too - and I need to re-categorize it as this category came along after I created the page.

A good question to ask yourself is: Is this fanpage about a website I've created, a product or brand I've created or am creating/launching, or is this a fan-based page for an already existent product.

If the answer is yes, then select the category that fits closest to what your page is for, fill in the brand, product name or website name you are creating the page for, then agree to Facebook Terms and Services and click on the final button to go into the next stage of page creation.

4.  Artist, Band or Public Figure

This category actually covers a lot more than just artists, bands or public figures.  Artist and public figure should be considered very broad terms.  Writer, journalist, author, teacher, government figure, as well as the generic "public figure," are just some of the options you can choose from.

To figure out if this page suits your needs, ask yourself these questions:
  • Is this an official/unofficial fanpage for someone (fictional character, government official, band member, etc.)?
  • Is this a fanpage dedicated to myself and my endeavors?  (ie. You're running your own fan page as an author, a journalist, a public figure, etc.)
  • Is this a fanpage for someone you work for as a social media manager and they fall into the above categories?
If the answer to one, or more, of these questions is yes, then you found the category you are looking for.

If this is the right choice, select the category that fits closest to what your page is for, fill in the name of the person/band/entity you are creating the page for, then agree to Facebook Terms and Services and click on the final button to go into the next stage of page creation.

5.  Entertainment

This is a broad category, but can be summed up pretty easily and just like Brand or Product fanpages, there can be "official" and "fan-based" pages found under this category as well.

An interesting note, "fictional characters" as a category can be found here as well under the Artist, Band and Public Figure categories.  But if you think about it, considering books, TV shows, movies, etc. also fall under this category, it does make sense.

This category also includes Book Stores - so if you are a new/used small book store, this would be a perfect place for you to have your page because you are considered to be entertainment.

Besides book, book series, movies, movie characters and other related topics, it also includes school, amateur and professional sports teams, as well as songs, music and albums.

Some questions to ask yourself to see if your page qualifies for this section:

  • Is this about a book/movie/music song/album?
  • Is this about a radio station or book store?
  • Is this a page for a character found in a book/movie/TV series?
  • Is this for a sports team of some sort?
  • Is this any other kind of entertainment?
If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then this is the category for you.  Select the category that fits closest to what your page is for, fill in the appropriate name for what you are creating the page for, then agree to Facebook Terms and Services and click on the final button to go into the next stage of page creation.

6.  Cause or Community

This section has no drop down category list to chose from.

Instead, you just type in the name of your cause or community and go from there.

Communities can be fairly broad, whether it's for a forum of gamers or other group of united people, it can fall under this group.  It could even be for a local community in a city or subdivision, etc.  Causes can be anything from an unofficial group trying to raise awareness about something (Like the Duck Dynasty groups) or more official like 501c3s or fundraising for specific causes, etc.

Only you can really decide if your page is for a cause or a community. Fill in the name of the cause or community you are creating the page for, then agree to Facebook Terms and Services and click on the final button to go into the next stage of page creation.

I hope this guide has helped some and, as always, if you have any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments.

Thursday Tutorials: Finding the Create Page Button on Facebook

One of the biggest things I've had to walk several of my freelance clients through (those that didn't want me to create the page for them, they wanted to learn how to do it on their own), was "Where do you find the button to create a Facebook page?"

To be honest, when I created my first page a few years back, the button was tricky to find.  It's still a bit tricky to find if you don't already admin other pages.  This article will simplify locating the button a bit.

The easiest way, if you are reading this blog is to click this link:  http://www.facebook.com/page

This will take you to the page creation site with the plethora of options you see in this screenshot:

Another way to get to this page is to type "Create a Page" in the search bar at the top and you should see a drop down menu like this:

If you select the top most option, you will come to the same screen as you do when you click on my link above.

And, finally, the third way to find it.  If you go to your wall feed, you should have a side that looks similar to this (obviously I have more pages and stuff because I admin several):

If you mouse over the word pages on the left, the word "MORE" appears on the right.  Click on more which will load a page like this:

Simply clock on "Create a Page" and go from there.

Do you know of other ways to easily find the "Create a Page" option?  If so, feel free to share them.  These are the ones I know of and seem to be the simplest ways to accomplish the goal.

Stay tuned for next week's tutorial, which will cover selecting the category for your page.
