Wednesday Words: Women.com

Women.com is a social media platform that is different from all the others we've talked about in the past few weeks. It is a site just for women where women can ask and answer questions amongst themselves.

I registered when it was still in beta and found it interesting and I'll be honest, I read more than I participated, but I think that will change as it continues to grow.

Similiar to reddit, Women.com hosts AMAs where participants can ask certain folks anything they want answered.

If you're interested in learning more, check out www.women.com. It's not really open for social media marketing, but it's a good place to be to get other questions answered.

Tuesday Tips: Know Your Goals, Make a Plan to Achieve Those Goals

“Identify your goals, then make a plan!”

Ashley Taylor Anderson, Marketing Manager, SinglePlatform
@SinglePlatform

This advice applies to everything, not just social media, but I figure we'll look at it from the perspective of tips for social media since a marketing manager mentions it.

Having goals for social media is important. Re-evaluating those goals routinely and adjusting your plan accordingly is just as important as setting your initial goals and creating a plan. Knowing what your goals are for social media allows you to plan your posts accordingly.

What are some common goals for marketing with social media?

Goals can include, but are not limited to:

  • Sales
  • Job recruitment
  • Education
  • Community involvement
  • Promotion of the company and it's goals
  • Other things
Often times, there are several goals. Each goal has different types of posts. Whether you're looking to drive sales or recruit for job openings, know what your goal is and what you plan to do when you achieve that goal.

If you have a team of people working on social media, it's a good idea to meet every so often - some say every three months, other say every six months - to re-evaluate your goals and your plan.

Each company and their goals are different, so I can't tell you how to create a plan. But it should include answers to questions like "how many times do we want to post a week" "will we be scheduling posts ahead of time" "who will be monitoring social media and engaging with our fanbase" "what social media platforms are we using" and "what types of posts are we going to be posting for each goal" are just a few examples.

There are many websites, books and seminars on this. If you are at a loss for where to begin, google "Social Media Plan" for a lot of useful guides, templates and advice.

Good luck!

Wednesday Words: Ello

Today we talk about another new social media platform: Ello.

Ello is an ad-free social media network which was founded by a small group of artists and programmers.

The Ello Manifesto tells all about it and is as follows:
"Your social network is owned by advertisers.
Every post you share, every friend you make, and every link you follow is tracked, recorded, and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.
We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity, and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.
We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate — but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life.
You are not a product."
So it's a total opposite of Tsu, which sees you as a product.

Ello is still in its infancy and the only way to get in to try it out is to get an invite from someone who is already a part of Ello.  If you want an invite, please feel free to contact me and I'll do what I can to get you one to try it out.

So to sum it up, Ello is a new, ad-free social media platform that is still growing and learning how to work.  Check it out when you can at www.ello.co

Tuesday Tips: Use More Visuals

We've talked about using visuals in the past (images, etc.) to draw people in and to get them to share it, but something we didn't talk about is how to use it on your website.

Images can be used and placed on your website then shared via social media sites, such as Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook accompanied by a link to encourage more people to visit your site.

Cynthia Sanchez, Founder of Oh So Pinteresting comments on it on Constant Contacts' blog:
“Visuals are easier to relate to than text so include images in your content that can be pinned to Pinterest and shared across other networks.”
The younger generations are a visual generation. They share any image they like and if they like an image about a story, they click on it to go to the story to read more about it. Using good images/creating good infographics and/or memes is a great way to drive traffic not only to your social media but to your website as well.

Remember the adage: A picture is worth a thousand words.

Wednesday Words: Tumblr

Today's word is Tumblr, which we've mentioned before when we talked about microblogging and microblogging platforms. Tumblr is a combination of a social media networking platofrm and a microblogging platform owned by Yahoo! Inc.

Tumblr allows users to post and reblog multimedia and other contents to a short-form blog. Users can easily follow other users' blogs or make blogs private.

As of March 1, 2015 Tumblr hosts more than 225.1 million blogs.

Tumblr is definitely an option for people looking to expand their social media reach, especially if they are doing short form blogging or sharing images as those are things both common to Tumblr.

Tuesday Tips: Be Authentic

This week's tip comes from another great quote from the CEO of Boom! Social. It's pretty good advice if you think about it a little bit.
“Be honest, be warm, be authentic, and put yourself in the shoes of your customers on social media.”
Kim Garst, CEO of Boom! Social
@KimGarst
Don't just be a brander, think like a customer. If this wasn't your product, would you want to be seeing this on social media of a product you follow?  If the answer is no, don't post it. For example - most people don't want to see politics or religion (unless the brand is a religion or political figure) on a product/company's Facebook page. A good tip to remember is if it's a topic you avoid in public situations to avoid uncomfortableness, you may want to avoid it on social media as well.

A big problem many social media managers face is trying to emulate other brands and be something they aren't. Be you. Be your brand. Be unique and stand out. Engage your fanbase (be warm) and answer as honestly as you can (without revealing information you don't want revealed - like how do you do this?)

The most successful social media marketers get their fanbase to like and interact - whether it be by asking/answering questions, sharing fun tidbits or trying something else out. Check out some of the social media sites for brands you follow and watch how they handle things. You may learn from it!

Enjoy!
