It might have been a good thing I didn't get to write today's Tuesday Tips until this morning because I just got to see an interesting change happen to Twitter in just a matter of minutes. In fact I saw a tweet about it before it changed over on my profile. Talk about a fast moving change.
What used to be Twitter's favorite and star icon to favorite items has changed to like and a heart icon instead. See the screenshot below for reference.
So gone are our Favorites and stars and welcome to hearts and Likes. Now, instead of favoriting posts, you get to <3 and like them. An interesting change. It will be interesting to see if Twitter puts out any information on the change.

Tuesday Tips: Post Pictures on Twitter
For those relatively new to Twitter and Social Media, this might be a surprise. For everyone else who has been around the block a time or two already know this - but you can post more than just words to Twitter, you can post photos and videos as well.
Today's tip: Post pictures to Twitter!
Now, after saying this, there are a few things to remember. You will lose a number of characters when you add an image to Twitter, so keep that in mind when preparing a post to go along with your photo. Keep the tweet and associated hastags short and sweet. Make sure the pictures are engaging - since Twitter now shows previews of images in timelines, it is important to make images engaging.
Most importantly - have fun with it.

Tuesday Tips: Don't Make These #Hashtag Mistakes
Are you making these common mistakes in your Tweets? Check this list out and try to eliminate some of these common mistakes from your Tweeting habits:
Hope these tips help!

- Using too many hashtags. There should be 1-3 hashtags per tweet. Tweets with one or two hashtags have been seen to receive 20% higher engagement, according to Passion Digital.
- Using inappropriate hashtags. This can kill your target audience if you aren't targeting with the right tweets. Be sure to check out posts similar to the hashtag you are using to be sure what you're posting is relevant and similar.
- Using a Trending Hashtag when your post has nothing to do with that trending hashtag. It might be very tempting to do this, but if your post has nothing to do with a trending hashtag, just don't use it. Pro Tip: Don't try to create a post about every trending hashtag either just to get noticed. It's poor marketing and Twitter etiquette.
- Use appropriate hashtags with your pictures! Some people, myself included, often forget to hashtag their photos when they share them.
- Don't hashtag every word in a tweet. Refer to the first point in this post - that would be using too many hashtags and is a sign of a novice user. Pick important, relevant terms and hashtag them.
- Check what other posts are listed with your hashtag(s). It's often good to see what other tweets and conversations are being had with similar hashtags. You might even learn a thing or two.
- Do not hashtag more than two or three words combined. More than that becomes obnoxious and annoying. In that same line of thought, hashtagging all capitalized words is also obnoxious.
Hope these tips help!

Tuesday Tips: Linking in Tweets
Have you ever wondered where to put your links in your tweets? I know I have and I have experimented with several different ways, but it seems like passion digital has done some research on the topic and they concluded the following:
Get your links in early. Put your key message before your link. Any after thoughts, opinions or additional commentary should go after the link. Intersparce your hastags as well both before and at the end of your tweet, just remember not to use too many hashtags.

Tuesday Tips: The 80/20 Twitter Philosophy
Social Media Marketing is all about finding the right mix of engagement with that particular social media platform. Looking at Twitter, a study has shown that people marketing on Twitter should be marketing 20% of the time and engaging in conversations the remaining 80% of the time.
Engaging in conversations can be anything ranging from replying to tweets, retweeting tweets, thanking followers, or commenting on posts of people/brands you follow. Most importantly, Twitter is about interacting with other users on Twitter. Take advantage of those conversations and engage more than you would on Facebook or elsewhere.

Tuesday Tips: Why Spell Check is Important
As we mentioned in our first post almost a little more than a year ago - Tuesday Tips: Spell Check Before You Post - nothing is more embarrassing than to quickly type up a Facebook post, Twitter post or create a graphical image and post it, just to see a few minutes to an hour later that you made a huge spelling mistake and the spelling and grammar police are out to get you.
There are other reasons, besides avoiding embarrassment, that make spell checking important. Some of those reasons include:
- It makes you, and subsequently your brand, look intelligent.
- It makes you appear to be careful and conscientious of your posts.
- By correct spelling and using the right words, it helps your followers to easily understand you (because yes, using the wrong homophones can create confusion at times).
- It's good for feedback - because let's be honest, you don't want to end up with negative feedback just because of a spelling mistake.
There are many other reasons as well. Check out these articles on why spelling correctly on social media sites is important:
- 7 Reasons Why Spelling and Grammar are Important on Facebook, Twitter and other Social Media Sites
- Ruining Social Media Credibility with Bad Spelling & Grammar

Tuesday Tips: Optimize for Mobile
While Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. are all styled and optimized for mobile, is the website your posts are directing them to optimized for mobile? If the answer is "I don't know" or "I'm not sure" then chances are the ultimate answer is no and you may not be seeing conversions and traffic because of this.
If you were waiting for mobile to arrive before tweaking your site, you've waited too long. Mobile is here to stay with smart phones, tablets, netbooks, laptops and more. Studies have shown that mobile engagement is often higher from mobile devices than traditional desktops and laptops - something to think about.
If your website isn't optimized for mobile - now's the time to fix that. If you can't fix the entire site, perhaps design a mobile friendly site that you can direct your Facebook page to or a landing page that will detect if they are using mobile then send them to the mobile site.
Keeping your site mobile friendly will help you gain and retain users.
With every step you take – think about mobile.

Tuesday Tips: Recycle Old Content
A regular piece of advice is to post content several times a day to your social media networks in an attempt to gain more viewers - or so that those that miss your first post catch a later one. This is good advice but many people think that this means having several new pieces of content on their site to promote every day - which isn't necessarily true.
While new content is helpful, creating several pieces of new content daily, especially if you are a small brand or small blog, is damn near impossible. If I was perfectly honest, I'd say that creating a post a day six days a week is quite trying and I barely manage it some weeks. I manage it poorly on other weeks when my posts aren't scheduled out in advance. Yet, even scheduling in advance, it can be hard to have more than one post available to share daily.
This is where today's tip comes into play: recycling old content.
When I want to drive more content to my site, I will often share old posts via Twitter and Facebook. I'll take a look at what was most popular that week or what was most popular in the last year and retweet those posts with a different post than before.
A lot of recycling content is presenting it with a different wrapping. Instead of just linking it how it appears in Twitter - create a different statement, like "Why is spell check important? Check these tips out?" or "Have you seen the most popular blog post on my site? Check this one out on spell checking." There are many ways to re-present old content.
Alternatively, there are also many ways to rewrite old content. Keep in mind, you definitely do not want to repost the same content over and over again as new content - that kills SEO and unique article rankings in Google and most search engines - but finding new ways to say what you said before is always a great way to drive more traffic to your site.
What are ways that you have recycled content? Leave your answers below!

Tuesday Tips: Share useful tips
Today's tip came from a post that was made to Constant Contact's Facebook Page.
Some of the most successful website and business fanpages are successful because their social media managers post tips to the pages and not just what the company is up to, what you can buy, etc. Useful tips, especially those in graphical form, get shared more often than non-graphical posts.
So if you sell books, maybe post a few tips on how you published your book or edited it, decided on the title etc. If you sell jewelry, provide tips on how to maintain the shine and natural good look of jewelry so it doesn't tarnish. If you run a construction business, post tips on how people can maintain the work they just had done on their home.
It's not hard to be informative and share useful tips with your users - it just takes a little planning and thought.
Good luck!

Tuesday Tips: Start small
When everything is big and out there and encouraging you to jump in and do it all, sometimes it's hard to remember that the best thing you can do is to start small or you'll be overwhelmed.
Starting small can mean launching only a couple of social media sites at a time. Or it can mean focusing on existing social media sites, responding to posts, engaging users and learning what works and what doesn't work with your followers.
Every brand has to start somewhere and sometimes starting out small makes it easier than looking at a huge plan and being overwhelmed by it.
Good luck!

Tuesday Tips: Pin an Important, Relevant Post Once a Week
Today's tip is simple and applies to both Facebook and Twitter - I'm not positive if you can pin posts on Google+ or not, if you can, I'll mention it in a future post - Once a week pin an important and relevant post on your Twitter Account and Facebook page.
Pinning an interesting or relevant post on a weekly basis increases visibility and distribution of your post to your views. Translation: if you want a post to be seen more often and by more users, pin it to your page/Twitter account.
Pinning is very easy and in upcoming tutorials we'll walk you through how to pin an article to your Facebook page and how to pin a tweet to your Twitter wall.

Tuesday Tips: Pay Attention to Trending Topics
Trending topics can be your best friend when trying to draw attention to your Facebook/Google page or Twitter account without having to pay for advertising. With all three of the previously mentioned social networks, trending topics is a way for people to click on a topic and see all the posts about that topic in a quick, easy to navigate way.
I have seen the power of trending topics. One of the pages I admin struggles to get more than 100 views per post even though it has more than 35k followers. As the site is related to gaming, I happened to see a video from SDCC come out that was video game related and shared it immediately on our Facebook page.
Not even 24 hours later we had more than 100 shares, more than 85,000 views and 50+ likes and a handful of comments on the post. At the time I had posted it, it wasn't trending, but not even an hour later, it was. We also gained a handful of new likes from this share.
So if there's something trending and you can post something related to it that relates to your business as well, I strongly encourage you to go for it. You never know what it might do for views to your page and subsequently website.
It is important to note, while often times trending topics are the same on all networks, occasionally, they are different. It is something to keep in mind depending on what network you are targeting for more views from.

Tuesday Tips: Take Advantage of Twitter Lists
If you aren't already familiar with Twitter Lists, perhaps you should be.
Twitter users can create, follow lists you or others have created, subscribe to lists or check Twitter Lists as you go about your day. Twitter lists are used to create an easy way to find people and posts of similar interests. If you are added to a list, you will get a Twitter notification that you've been added to someone's list along with who's list it is and what the list was for.
Personally, I've been added to Gaming, Ultima Online and Social Media Marketing lists because of the variety of things I post about.
Later this week, we'll have a Thursday Tutorial for how to create lists for yourself.
But I'm sure you're asking: what are lists for?
Well other than allowing you to easily follow postings on various topics, it allows you to easily find said posts and retweet them. As you may recall, I strongly encourage folks to not only tweet, but retweet posts that would be of interest not only to you, but to your followers. For example, I often retweet posts about social media when I find some that I think people who follow me would find useful - even if I don't necessarily follow the person who posted it - lists help with that.
If you haven't tried lists yet, there's no better time than now. Good luck!

Tuesday Tips: Managing Followers Should be a Daily Routine
One of the best pieces of advice I have seen regarding managing followers and social media is to not only encourage your friends, family and clients to like your page and follow you on other forms of social media, but you should also spend some time each day liking and following social media accounts with similar interests to what your business is posting about.
Managing your followers and who you follow should be a daily routine. If you have a number of folks follow you on Twitter, check them out, see if their interests are similar to yours and if they are, return the favor and follow them. Same is true on Google+. You can add people to your page's circle, just like they can add your page to their circles.
You can also like other businesses as your Facebook page. This is an important way to get your name out there.
Finally, you can also follow folks on Pinterest and Instagram.
Yes, it takes a little bit of time, but if you spend 10-15 minutes each day keeping up with it, it will help out a lot.

Tuesday Tips: Spell Check Before You Post
Nothing is more embarrassing than to quickly type up a Facebook post, Twitter post or create a graphical image and post it, just to see a few minutes to an hour later that you made a huge spelling mistake and the spelling and grammar police are out to get you.
Which is what brings us to today's tip: Spell check before you post.
At least you have a bit of a savior with Facebook these days, you can edit a post - but if you don't catch it quick enough, trust me, it's out there and the spelling police will make fun of you for it. It's worse if it's an image you created because those images will stay around FOREVER.
If you are posting via a mobile device, be sure to read and reread your post before you send it. Both iOS and Android like to auto-correct and auto-fill what it thinks you are trying to say and if you think it got it right, it may make for very embarrassing posts. If you don't believe me, just read some auto-correct fails - that will make you believe me.
If you are creating a graphic image with text, check, double check and triple check your spelling. If in doubt, look it up. Or, if in doubt, and you have a friend or co-worker nearby, have them look at it. Two heads are always better than one.
And finally, most browsers have a spell check function already built into them and if they don't you can download them as part of a free add-on. When you are writing posts for Facebook and Twitter, it should auto-flag any word it suspects is wrong and if you right click on it, give you options for spelling. Keep in mind though, it won't correct wrong words that are spelled correctly, so be sure to check not only for misspelled words, but correctly spelled words used incorrectly.
And while spell checking will help avoid embarrassing situations, just remember it happens to everyone, myself included. I am notorious for typing or swyping too fast when typing comments to friends on Facebook and it makes for an entertaining laugh. But for a brand, try to spell check as much as you can before you post!
Good luck!

Tuesday Tips: Build Relationships
Several experts in social media have been recently quoted via Constant Contact talking about building relationships with social media.
“Social media is virtual networking. Take the time to build relationships just like you would face to face.” -- Laura Cummins, Owner, NineDotz Consulting @NineDotz
“In social media, content leads to conversation, conversations build relationships, and relationships result in ROI." -- Robert Caruso, Founder & CEO, Bundle Post @fondalo
Relationships are important in the real world, but also in social media. Friends will recommend other friends to like a page, or a friend who sees a friend liked or shared or commented on something on your wall may be inclined to see what it's about and in turn like your page. Relationships can be more than just the consumer level, but also on the corporate and non-profit level. Like various corporations you work with or are affiliated with with your company's page. Same for non-profits your company supports. Network and build your relationships through social media.
And, as we keep mentioning in posts through out the blog, be sure to engage your fans, your customers, and the companies/organizations your affiliated with. All of that helps to build your relationships through social media.

Tuesday Tips: Don't Spread Yourself Thin
Three folks that post about social media and have jobs in the social media industry all have the same advice, worded differently: Pick your platforms and don't spread yourself thin.
“Don’t spread yourself thin; be strategic and focus on one platform that seems most promising for your brand and be awesome at that, rather than being mediocre at a bunch of different platforms.”-- Matt Steele, Social Media Planner, San Diego Zoo @mattofsteele
“Identify the correct social media platform(s) and then post with some consistency, commit to at least once per week.”-- Matthew Service, Founder, Service Internet Solutions @mattservice
“Choose the social media platforms that work for your business and reach your target market.”-- Jenneil Peters, CEO and Founder, Modern Working Woman @ModWorkingWoman
With that many people saying essentially the same thing, they can't be wrong. Take the important bits (focus on the correct social media platform(s) and post with regularity and you'll be doing good.

Tuesday Tips: Don't Hashtag Every Word in Social Media Posts
We've all had a person, or two (or more) that we've followed on Twitter that has committed the social media sin of hashtagging every word in their post.
Not sure what I mean? Let me give a fictional example.
Hashtag only important words or phrases. Hashtag what pertains to your post. And definitely don't hashtag every word. That's a bad, BAD idea.
If you aren't sure what hashtags are out there, search for them. if similar posts match what your tweet is about, use it. This rule also applies to Pinterest, Google+ and Facebook. Just because you can add hashtags to everything doesn't mean you should. Go for quality over quantity.
Have fun!

Tuesday Tips: Gain More Followers
Today's tips cover ways to help you gain more followers on Twitter. The majority of the options are free and are common sense - but I will say there is a paid option some people may not consider viable, but can be.
1. Follow others.
Unless you're a famous personality or have connections to people with a lot of followers who recommend their followers follow you, the best way to start out is to follow other people. Follow people/brands you have interest in or are similar to. Follow people who are your friends or who you know visit your business or use your services. Follow people who's posts you think are interesting. And, follow people who your friends recommend or if you like the ones Twitter recommend, add them.
Also, if you're just starting out and someone you don't know follows you, follow them back. Eventually your follower to following ratio will even out and if you're a brand, eventually it will exceed your following numbers.
But you have to start somewhere and that somewhere involves doing some legwork and following others first.
2. Engage in conversation.
Don't hesitate to reply to tweets publicly. It allows people to see you and if they like what you're posting in reply, they may follow you. Or they may see what your other tweets are like, then follow you. The more you get your Twitter handle out there, the better.
3. Promote your Twitter handle everywhere.
Put it on your business cards, on your door for your business, on your promotional material and especially on your website. Add it to your signature for email (if it is appropriate to do so). As mentioned above, the more you get your Twitter handle out there, the better.
4. Add the follow button to your blog/website/where you can.
This is fairly easy to do. If you use Wordpress for your website, there are a number of different plugins that you can use to add the Follow Me button to your site. There is also code you can manually enter, depending on what your using to create your website.
Even though it doesn't add to your followers, it is a good idea to also add Tweet links for your site, that way people can easily share content from your website - kinda like there's the sharing options below this post, including the T for Twitter.
5. Tweet and Retweet quality, shareable content.
If someone you follow posts a Tweet that would be good to be Retweeted to your followers, retweet it. Some ideas for retweets are:
6. Use appropriate #hashtags.
Hashtags are a great way to get new people to see your posts, which in turn gives them a chance to retweet and/or follow you.
Use appropriate hashtags about things related to you, or your brand, or what you're posting about in order to generate accurate ledes and a userbase of followers.
But do use common sense and don't use too many hashtags. Just because you can use more than one doesn't necessarily mean you should.
7. Use the promoted accounts option.
This is the paid option mentioned above and while I've hesitated using it, I'm starting to consider it more. Twitter is, like Facebook, a free service. But if you are using it to market your company, your restaurant or yourself, then you should invest money into it as part of your marketing budget and strategy.
Promoted accounts have posts seen by people who are not followers and give them an opportunity to be able to follow you - something they may not have seen or done if you hadn't spent money to be a promoted handle.
With those things in mind, if you're looking to get more followers, try some of these tips and see if they help.

If someone you follow posts a Tweet that would be good to be Retweeted to your followers, retweet it. Some ideas for retweets are:
- Someone compliments/praises your brand in an @message to you. Retweet that message and say thanks.
- Someone #FF you. Retweet it, then be sure to reply to them and say thanks.
- Someone posts something that is relevant to what you, or your brand, is about, retweet it.
All of these are ways not only to get new followers, but to engage and encourage others to retweet you, getting your name out there.
I can't even begin to mention the number of people I have followed simply because they've retweeted my messages.
