Friday Facts: Facebook Promising to Clean Up News Feed with New Algorithm

There has been a lot of buzz this past week talking about Facebook is planning to clean up the news feed by reducing the like/comment/share baiting posts that we see frequently in our news feeds, but the question is, how will it affect legitimate pages who are just trying to increase the number of people who see what they post because Facebook's algorithms suck and shows your posts to less than 5% of your fanbase.

You can check out the official announcement here.

Facebook answers the question about how will affect pages with the following:

Will this affect my Page?
The vast majority of publishers on Facebook are not posting feed spam so they should not be negatively impacted by these changes, and, if anything, may see a very small increase in News Feed distribution.
A smaller set of publishers who are frequently and intentionally creating feed spam will see their distribution decrease over the next few months.  We’re making these changes to ensure that feed spam content does not drown out the content that people really want to see on Facebook from the friends and Pages they care about.
The Next Web gives their views on the changes here.

Facebook, however, doesn't address how it will filter out the spammy, like-baiting posts from people who are legitimately trying to increase their views by encouraging their followers to like, share or comment or are running contests with those specifications.

What are your thoughts?  Is this a good thing?  How will it change how you market to your fanbase if you're a person who tries to run contests with like/sharing/comment posts?

Wednesday Words: Retweet

If you're new to social media, or new to Twitter, you may see people talking about "Retweet this" or "This has been retweeted by: Name".  Retweeting is when someone shares your post, via the retweet option on Twitter.  It shows as them retweeting your post.

Retweeting is a great way to share content of people you follow on Twitter that may be of interest to your followers.  It is also a way to get new followers - especially if you retweet someone who isn't already a follower.  Some folks will retweet things you post if you retweet things they post.  It's one big happy family at times with retweeting.

Most importantly, though, if you want people to retweet what you post, you need to retweet their posts from time to time as well.  Reciprocity is a good thing.

Retweeting is very easy and you have a couple options to do so.  You can just click the retweet button, which looks like a square with arrows around it, or you can retweet as a quote and comment on the retweet if there's enough characters to do so.

So if you haven't retweeted posts, you may look into starting to do so. It might just help you gain followers and increase your content output.

Tuesday Tips: Remember to be Social with Social Media

While the whole purpose of having social media is to promote and support your brand, you also have to remember to be socialable with your brand's/individual's social media accounts.

All too often people posting with brands forget to be socialable and engaging with their users.  It's okay for a brand to have a bit of a personality.  It actually helps a bit, especially if someone is upset about something and you're trying to smooth things over as best you can via social media.  Having a positive social media personality can go a long way.

The important thing to remember, while you should talk about yourself, you should also ask questions that engage your viewers and fanbase as well - and it doesn't necessarily have to be questions related to your brand (but it can be).

Some ideas to help be social and engage your fanbase include:

  • For local brands/businesses, talking about local things going on - whether it be the weather, a sale at the store, local news or something related to an upcoming public event.
  • Ask people to share photos if they've been to your business.
  • Try out the new Q&A feature Facebook has rolled out to select pages.
  • Hold contests/give-aways.

Always remember to be polite.  Please and thank yous go a long way in this digital world.

Tuesday Tips are a series of tips released on Tuesday each week regarding a hint or tip to help you manage and market your Facebook presence better.  You can find all the Tuesday Tips by clicking on the Tuesday Tips tag below.
