Thursday Tutorials: UPDATED: How to Schedule Posts via Facebook

Today's Thursday Tutorial is a guide showing how to Schedule Posts within Facebook. This has changed since the original tutorial posted in February 2014, found here. It's even easier to schedule posts than previously.

For this guide, I'm using one of my fanpages for UO Home Decor, to demonstrate scheduling a post.

Access the page you wish to schedule a post for.  At the top right corner of the status update box, insure that it's set to post as that page, as seen below.

Once verified, click in the status update area. This will generate the box where you can add text as well as the "Publish" button and the drop down button to the right of it. If you click on the down arrow you get a menu like this:

Note: if you click on "Schedule" at this point and you put the date in and click Save it will error out because there is no text in the status field. So don't try to schedule the post till you have text in the field.

Once you've posted your status for the future, click on Schedule. This window will pop up where you can schedule a date and time.

Fill out the time and date you want and hit schedule.

If you accidentally forget to change the date and hit schedule, the following error message will pop up.

Once you've successfully scheduled the post, the pop-up boxes will disappear and a message like this will appear beneath the status box.

And that's it.

Remember, scheduling posts ahead of time is a great way to keep your Facebook page current and active.

Tuesday Tips: Planning for the New Year

Do you have a page but haven't done much with it?  Or perhaps you haven't gotten around to making a page for your business?  What about your Twitter account, Instagram, Pinterest Business account or LinkedIn Business Profile?  Once you've narrowed down the social media outlets you want to participate in, now is the perfect time to to settle down and start creating.  This will allow you to launch your band on social media platforms with the new year and see your stats from the beginning of the year.

The important thing to remember is that likes, follows, etc., start small and slowly spread.  Don't be shy about sharing a link to your social media accounts on your personal Facebook and LinkedIn walls and asking people to like and share it.  Don't be shy about inviting everyone on Facebook that you think would be interested in the page.  And don't be shy about emailing invites either.  A great way to let people know your business can be found on social media is to add it to the signature of your email as another way to connect with you.

While you can track your statistics for any time period, starting with the new year will give you an easy launch date to remember and measure the year's progress by.  It also gives you an opportunity to start with a fresh social media plan for the new year.  The new year is only a few days away.  If you can't hit the Jan. 1 deadline, target it for sometime in the month of January.  And keep in mind - plans need to be flexible and changing.

Best of luck and Happy New Year to everyone!

Merry Christmas to All

As mentioned in yesterday's Wednesday Words, with today being Christmas Day and spending time with family (and video games), we will not have a Thursday Tutorial due to the holiday.  The same will be true for next week with New Years Day.  We hope everyone is enjoying time off, if they are fortunate enough to not be working, and having a fun and enjoyable holiday season.

Merry Christmas!

Tuesday Tips Revisited: Post Seasonal Related Topics

This is an updated reprint from last year.  Since it is this time of year and the information is still viable and useful - especially if you are new to social media, I see no harm in revisiting it.

Christmas, and the holiday season in general, is upon us.  Christmas eve is tomorrow and Christmas day follows and that is quickly followed by New Years Eve and Day.

It doesn't matter the holiday you are celebrating, be sure to engage your customers/fans with a seasonal related post.  It can be something as simple as - we'll use today as an example - "Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas"  or "Happy Holidays" or "Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas".  The message doesn't have to be this generic, but it can be.

Or you could go a step further and create a custom graphic with the message to present to your customers.  Images are often liked and shared and creating a quick single or double image Christmas card isn't hard to do.

It's also good to engage folks with questions leading up to holidays and after holidays.  For example, on  one of the gaming pages I maintain, I have scheduled to ask "What games did you get for Christmas?" After Black Friday, we asked gamers what games they snagged.  On another of my blogs and facebook pages, I asked about what books or programs were on their Christmas wish lists.

This type of interaction shows that you aren't just about business and engages users in a different way.  If you are a creative type, you can even share custom holiday images, company holiday photos or a digital card with your followers.

That being said, we hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and you get what you were hoping for.

Wednesday Words: Avatar

Avatar, not to be confused with the movie with blue aliens, is an image used to represent yourself on a forum, Twitter, Facebook, etc.  It can be a picture of yourself, a logo you like or any number of things that represents something about you.

People new to social media are sometimes confused by the term avatar.  For Twitter and Facebook, the avatar should be your company logo - that way the Facebook/Twitter post is easily recognizable while enforcing and enhancing branding of the name and logo.

The Avatar is what people will see and associate with you when scanning through their social media - so you want it to be identifiable and recognizable.

If you are unsure what you should do for your page's Avatar or your Twitter Feed Avatar, I highly suggest looking at other, similar Twitter Feed and Facebook pages, then go from there.  If you still aren't sure, consult with others.  You'd be surprised what people will suggest that just might work.

Tuesday Tips: Like Content As Yourself

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it's really something I've tried to explain to owners of pages that I have helped create or maintain and it falls on deaf ears.  The advice: Like your page's content as yourself.

There is a valid reason for this and it's not just to be narcissistic.  Previously we talked about engagement and how user engagement raises the number of people who see your page's content as well as raising the rank of where your content will appear in their news feed.  Each like you give to your content - or even just liking your own page - is an important step in allowing your friends and fan page followers to see your content.

"No one wants to see the owner/admins liking their own stuff."

I've actually had a page admin tell me that before.  So let me get this right - you aren't proud enough of your page to like your own stuff?  Or perhaps you just don't want to be embarrassed that you liked your own content.  It's something you have to get over and past if you want your page to grow.  More and more people are understanding why everyone likes and share their own page's contents - even if their friends like the page.  It helps increase visibility.

"I'll let my other admin do it."

Strange how this thought seems prevalent, yet then the admin are confused when no other admin likes content.  Most admin think the other admin will do it, then it doesn't happen.  Get out of that mindset.  Like your own content and the content of other admins.

"I don't know how to change from my page to my account."

Well, if that's the case, you're in luck.  We'll be covering that this Thursday! And don't worry, it's really easy to do.

Thursday Tutorials: How to Schedule Posts via Facebook

Note: There's an updated version of this article here.

Today's Thursday Tutorial is a guide showing how to Schedule Posts.  A follow up guide will show you how to access scheduled posts and change when they are posting or how to delete them.

For this guide, I'm using one of my fanpages for UO Home Decor, to demonstrate scheduling a post.

Access the page you wish to schedule a post for.  At the top it should say: "You are posting, commenting, and liking as YOUR PAGE NAME — Change to YOUR NAME".  If it doesn't say this and it has "You are posting, commenting, and liking as YOUR NAME — Change to YOUR PAGE NAME," click to change it to your page name - that way you are acting as the page admin.   Scroll down to where you post a status and click in it to type your post.

You should see these options below your status window area.

The button to the left, that looks like a clock, is the scheduler.  The button immediately to the right of that that looks like a pin is the location tool which allows you to put a location with a post.

Click on the clock icon and the following should appear:
This allows you to set a date and time for it to publish.

Click on the calendar to set the date.  Use the arrow keys to change the month, then just click on whatever date you want.

The date will auto-fill in and the calendar view will disappear once you've clicked on the date you want.  You can alter this information at any time, including after you hit the schedule button, but that will be covered in another tutorial.

If you click in the "Add a Time?" box, it will let you type in a number, then provide a drop down menu to select AM or PM and a specific time from.  It looks something like this:

Select the time you want.

Now, if you click in the status box to write your post, the options above will disappear, but you will still see the "Schedule" button instead of the "Post" button.  You don't have to set up the time and date before you type your post, but I find it helps with not accidentally posting a post if you set the time up before you create the post.

Once you create the post, just hit Schedule and it's saved.  You can change between Status, Photo/Video and Offer/Event, but I suggest selecting what you want prior to scheduling it to help with efficiency.

So now that you know how to schedule posts, you may be asking why you want to schedule posts.  The answer is simple.  If you are busy with work or attending an event or on vacation, scheduling posts allow the posts to post for you without you having to worry about it.  You should still have some page admin checking things.  But it also allows you to plan some things out in advance and not have to worry about it each week - especially if you do weekly questions or memes.

Tuesday Tips: Schedule Posts

One of the simplest things you can do is to schedule posts for upcoming events, sales, or other topics to automatically post on your Facebook page.  It takes a little bit advanced planning, but is well worth it in the long run.

Facebook has a nice system set up for scheduling posts and a recent upgrade to the system made it even easier.  You can tell it what day and time to post the blurb, image, video, or whatever.

If you're more tech savvy, you can schedule posts using Hootsuite to post to multiple social media sites.

If you want to learn how to schedule posts, check out this week's Thursday Tutorial, which will show you how to schedule posts via Facebook - we'll do Hootsuite at a later time.

Tuesday Tips: Optimize Post Times

Once you have more than 30 users, it's good to regularly look at your Page Insights to learn what your fan's habits in viewing your page are.

You will notice, over time and as your page grows in likes, that the statistics will change too.  Knowing some of these statistics will help you reach more of your users with your posts.

One of the important stats to reaching more users is knowing when the majority of your users view your posts.  For example, on my UOHomeDecor page, the my users see more of my posts over the middle of the day, so scheduling posts during that time would be of help to me and to them.

The day of the week for posts doesn't seem to matter for this page as it looks like approximately the same number of users see posts each day.

Each page's users are unique.  If you maintain multiple pages, there is a chance that some pages will have similar viewing schedules while others are totally different.  Schedule posts via Facebook post Scheduler or Hootsuite or other products to post an hour or so before your normal peak viewing time to optimize your post's reach.

I hope this tip is useful to you.  If you have any questions or suggestions for tips, please feel free to leave a comment.  We'd love to use your questions to provide answers as tips for others.

Thursday Tutorials: Setting Your Cover Photo

There are lots of ways to customize your page and tweak things - so many that going into them all at once might be overwhelming.  Instead, we'll take a section each week, alternating between how to do things mentioned in Tuesday Tips, to review in Tutorials.

This week, we're going to look at setting up your cover photo.  A cover photo is, by no means, required, but is a nice addition to pages.  For example, if you have a bigger logo that you can use for the cover photo and an abbreviation you use an avatar, you'd use the logo as your cover photo while the abbreviation design as your avatar.  Or if you have a store front, you could put your logo as your avatar and a nice storefront picture as your cover photo.

So to get started, click on the "Add Cover Photo" button on the left hand side.  When you mouse over it, you'll see this text here.
Once you click on "Add A Cover" this text box will pop up before you can go any further:
Once you click "Okay" you are taken back to your main page where you can once again click on the "Add a Cover".  This time you are given options to select a photo or upload a photo, as seen below.

I ended up choosing the "Upload a Photo" Option.  Though if you, or another admin, have uploaded cover photos in the past and you want to choose from photos you have uploaded, chose the first one, then it will take you to your uploaded photos for the page to select from.  The second option will give you the typical find file window.  Navigate to your image and select it and it will upload.

Note: Cover photos are supposed to be 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall.  If you upload a file larger than this, Facebook will attempt to resize it appropriately.  The smallest image dimensions that will work for a cover photo is 399 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall.  More information can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/help/125379114252045 .   These dimensions apply to pages as well as cover photos for personal profiles.

I uploaded a free cover image, appropriate to my page, found here:  http://www.coverphotoed.com/photo/facebook-like

Once uploaded and processed, it will appear like this.
In this screen, you can adjust the image if it's not how you want it to appear, moving left, right, up or down till it's how you want it. Once you are done, click "Save Changes" and it will take you back to your page with the new cover photo in place with everything else, as seen below:

If you have a graphic designer on your team, I strongly encourage allowing them to create, upload and adjust the photo so it works well with your avatar.  If you don't have a graphic designer and aren't good with making them yourself (or are in a rush), you can find a number of free cover photos online.  Check out these sites (I found these just by googling "free facebook page covers".  My cover for this page that I uploaded comes from CoverPhotoed.

  1. https://www.facebook.com/freecoverphotos
  2. http://www.pagemodo.com/welcome/cover-photos  - helps you create your own cover photos too.
  3. http://profilerehab.com/facebook_home
  4. http://www.coverphotoed.com/
There are many sites out there, just be sure to read through their stuff and make sure it's okay for pages to use.

Hope this is helpful to some!

Tuesday Tips: Create Quality Content

Sometimes it's not about creating a lot of content, but about creating quality, share-able content.  You can have a lot of content pouring out - and many pages do - but if users aren't engaged and the posts aren't share-able, then you have a problem.

As a page admin, or content manager, it is your (or your team if you have a team) job to create content that is useful and relevant to your fans/followers.  It is also your job to encourage those same fans/followers to comment and share your content - which means it has to be engaging.  Ultimately, it all boils down to shareability.

A great way to do this is to ask open ended questions that target your audience - whether it be about your brand, product or upcoming event.  Encourage them to answer.

Post photos and videos that are relevant to what your page is about.  Posting things that aren't relevant in an attempt to click farm likes is just not kosher.

Put thought into what you post and what you schedule to post.  Is it something you would share if you weren't the admin?  Is it something your most cynical friend would share?  Admittedly, not everyone will share everything you post - but getting some shares is always a good thing.

If your page is starting out, you should target to post to your audience at least once a week, but more likely three times a week.  You can go more or less than three times a week, but three times a week will help keep your fans engaged and returning.  The larger your fanbase is, the more often you can, and should, post.

Tomorrow, in Wednesday Word's, we explain shareability and why it's important.

Thursday Tutorials: Creating Your Page

The previous tutorials - prior to missing an article for last week - covered how to find the "Create a Page" buttons as well as how to chose the category your page falls into.  Today, using this blog as an example, I will walk through how to create a page for a website/brand/product.  The process is pretty much the same for the other categories - but if specific tutorials for each category are wanted, I will need to be able to create a page for a specific category.

That being said, we'll start with the very first step, finding and clicking on the click page button - as seen below.

Once you click that +Create a Page button, this page below will pop up where you can chose the category you want your page to be in.  If you are confused on this, please check the article found here for additional information as to what types of pages go where.

Since I'm creating a page for my blog (aka Website), I selected the Brand or Product category from above.  Then in the drop down menu for selections there, I chose Website, as seen below.

After that is selected, I typed in (what was then) the name of the blog (as seen below).

Once I hit the "Get Started" button, that's when I discovered I had to change the name of my page.  Long story short, there is some programing within page creation which will prevent you from creating pages with certain names.  Using the term "Facebook" in a page name is forbidden - which should have been an "oh duh" moment for me, but I hadn't really considered it before I started the blog.

If you hit the "Get Started" button and a red error message pops up similar to the one below, click on the "Learn More" to figure out what you might have done wrong, then change the name of your page - as I did.

Thankfully, Social Media Marketing: Tips and Hints was permissible and available, which is why the blog's address and name changed to that.  Finding the name was allowed, hitting "Get Started" Takes you to this next page.

This was my first draft of what I put in the description area.  You are limited to a certain number of characters, so be sure to be concise about what your page is for.  I redid this and ended up with a shorter blurb and a way to add in my blog address.  Note: If you put in a web address, it will automatically link in the page's description - a great way to hopefully get people to click to your site if they stumble across your page.

Now, I failed to get screenshots of the next two steps, but they are relatively easy to walk through.

Your profile picture, or avatar, is the image that will be seen in the feed of folks who liked you.  Facebook requires the size to be at least 180x180 in size, but you can use almost any size, just as long as it resizes right and looks good in the square.  Facebook has options for you to select what you want people to see if the image doesn't resize right.  If all else fails, I strongly encourage you to spend time on selecting your image and making sure it looks right.

Most importantly, don't worry if it doesn't look right or you decide that's not the image you want to use.  You can always change it after the page is initially created.

Once you have the image uploaded and selected, you move on to the final phase, adding your new page to your Favorites section.  That will make your page show up as seen below.

Once that is done, you hit the final button and it will take you to a pretty sparse page, but it's been created and your name has been saved.

Our next article will continue in the same theme of this page, but with customizing your page that you just created.

Wednesday Words: Algorithms and Social Media

Every so often when you come across articles explaining why your page posts only reach a certain percentage of users who like your page, the term algorithms pops up and are left relatively unexplained.  And if you are like me, you remember learning about algorithms in school (vaguely), but you haven't had to use them in the 10 years since college, so you forget what they're used for.  And you wonder why algorithms would be used in social media.

While algorithms is a math term, it is also used in programming and where social media is concerned, algorithms is a program used to determine who sees what percentage of  posts you post to your various social media outlets.

Each social media tool has different ways to calculate how your users will see what percentage of your posts.  This is called an algorithm.  Facebook changes the name of theirs, the most recent one being Edge Rank and it determines not only how much you see from pages you like, but how much you see from friends based on how much you - and others - interact with your friends.

Most of these algorithms are based on user/friend engagement.  If you see a page liking it's own post, or a friend liking their posts, it's likely not because they're being narcissistic, it's because they've read about how the algorithms work and if they want more of their friends or likes to see the post, they like it.

What's worse, is once you have the algorithms figured out for each form of social media, they often change.

TLDR version: Algorithms are formulas used by engines in social media to determine who sees what on their walls.

Tuesday Tips: Engage Your Fans

On a Wednesday Words, we explained engagement from fans and how you as page admins must also be engaged with your users.

The best way to engage your users are to post things two to three times a week that encourages participation.  That can be a question for fans to answer, a video, pictures or, occasionally, a contest to get them to interact*.

As always, respond to customer/fan questions and feedback that they post on your page.  If they take time to give you feedback, take time to acknowledge it.

Wednesday Words: Facebook Place

If you have a physical location - store, restaurant, etc. - there is a good chance that you have a generically created Facebook Place already there and waiting for you to claim it.  You may even have fans already.

Search for yourself on Facebook before you attempt to create a page for your business.  If you find your company as a Facebook Place, follow the steps to go about claiming the page, then take it over and run it as you would a typical Facebook Page.

The nice thing about Facebook Place, customers can check into it from Facebook and leave reviews.

Tuesday Tips: Respond to Messages

Today's tip is a pretty obvious one, but some page admins may forget to do this.

When your customers/fans message you (if you have the option for them to message you available), be sure to respond to them.  This shows you care about your customers and is a great way to offer quality customer service and build relationships outside of normal business hours.  Not to mention it shows that you care about their input which can help build customer bases when they tell their friends about the positive and fast reply they received from you.

Replying to messages isn't just limited to the private message feature.  When a customer posts something to your wall, be sure to address it as well.

Tuesday Tips: The New Year

Do you have a page but haven't done much with it?  Or perhaps you haven't gotten around to making a page for your business?  Now is the perfect time to do it.  It will let you launch with the new year and see your stats from the beginning of the year.

The important thing to remember is that likes start small and slowly spread.  Don't be shy about sharing a link to your page on your wall and asking people to like and share it.  Don't be shy about inviting everyone on Facebook that you think would be interested in the page.  And don't be shy about emailing invites either.

While you can track your page for any time period, starting with the new year will give you an easy launch date to remember and measure the year's progress by.

Best of luck and Happy New Year to everyone!  We will be skipping Wednesday Words this week because of the holiday.

Wednesday Words: Merry Christmas

As mentioned in yesterday's Tuesday Tips, we will not have a Wednesday Words today due to the holiday.  The same will be true for next week.  We hope everyone is enjoying time off, if they are fortunate enough to not be working, and having a fun and enjoyable holiday season.

Merry Christmas!

Tuesday Tips: Post Seasonal Related Topics

This is a pertinent one since today is Christmas Eve.  It doesn't matter the holiday, engage your customers/fans with a seasonal related post.  It can be something as simple as - we'll use today as an example - "Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas"  or "Happy Holidays" or "Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas".  The message doesn't have to be this generic, but it can be.

It's also good to engage folks with questions leading up to holidays and after holidays.  For example, on  one of the gaming pages I maintain, I have scheduled to ask "What games did you get for Christmas?" After Black Friday, we asked gamers what games they snagged.

This type of interaction shows that you aren't just about business and engages users in a different way.  If you are a creative type, you can even share custom holiday images, company holiday photos or a digital card with your followers.

That being said, we hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and you get what you were hoping for.

Wednesday Words: Engagement

For the first Wednesday Words we're going to talk about a word that will be used a lot in this blog and that is "Engagement."

Engagement, also referred to interchangeably as interactions, refers to how users and your page administrators engage, or interact, with your page.

Engagement plays an important part in how many views a post gets.  As most current page owners know, only a relatively small percentage of your already active userbase see your posts - generally between 10-20%.  What most page admins don't know is that the more "users" who like, share, and comment will raise the number of people who see your posts because the posts are being engaged by users.

Every like is important.  Every share is important.  Every comment by users and by your page admins in response to your users raises the number of people who see your post because they are engaged.

It's why I encourage people who are admins on my page, not only to switch to their account to like a post, but to share it on their personal walls as well, and - perhaps - leave a pertinent comment on the page.

Sharing of posts is probably the most important thing.  The reason for this is more people will see the post on their walls when it is shared than the page - at least initially.

Just remember this: every like, share, and comment is considered users being engaged with your site.  Encourage your admins, your friends and your families to help you increase your reach by regularly liking and sharing posts.  You will see an increase in stats on posts they share compared to posts they don't share.

FYI for my readers - there will not be Wednesday Words for the net two weeks due to the holidays.  I figure people will be spending time with their families on those days and not online reading.
