Wednesday Words: MySpace

For those of us that were using this from the time it came out - before Facebook - we all know what MySpace is. A lot of us no longer use it, but it seems to have made a comeback after Justin Timberlake and others purchased it and turned it around.

That being said MySpace is another social media platform, similar in many ways to Facebook, but was known for users being able to completely customize their profiles and be unique from other users profiles. It was the most popular social networking site until Facebook took over.

All of that said, MySpace is still around and you can check it out by visiting www.myspace.com.

Today we talk about another new social media platform: Ello.

Ello is an ad-free social media network which was founded by a small group of artists and programmers.

The Ello Manifesto tells all about it and is as follows:

"Your social network is owned by advertisers. 

Every post you share, every friend you make, and every link you follow is tracked, recorded, and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold. 

We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity, and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership. 

We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate — but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life. 

You are not a product."

So it's a total opposite of Tsu, which sees you as a product.

Wednesday Words: Tumblr

Today's word is Tumblr, which we've mentioned before when we talked about microblogging and microblogging platforms. Tumblr is a combination of a social media networking platofrm and a microblogging platform owned by Yahoo! Inc.

Tumblr allows users to post and reblog multimedia and other contents to a short-form blog. Users can easily follow other users' blogs or make blogs private.

As of March 1, 2015 Tumblr hosts more than 225.1 million blogs.

Tumblr is definitely an option for people looking to expand their social media reach, especially if they are doing short form blogging or sharing images as those are things both common to Tumblr.
